This lively, interactive, and incredibly practical workshop will equip you with everything you need to begin or continue your journey with the short story. Combining discussion, writing exercises, and teaching drawn from Jan Carson’s extensive experience, you’ll explore all the components of the short story, including character development, plot, structure, voice, editing, and much more. Over the course of the two-and-a-half-hour session, you’ll have the chance to develop and begin writing your own short story, while Jan shares hard-earned advice on the publishing process.

Suitable for both beginner writers and those looking to reinvigorate their writing practice, all you need is an imagination, a pen, and a notebook.

About Jan Carson: Jan Carson is a Belfast-based writer whose work spans novels, short stories, and micro-fiction. Her novel The Fire Starters won the EU Prize for Literature for Ireland in 2019. Her latest works include The Raptures (2022) and Quickly, While They Still Have Horses (2024). She is the Seamus Heaney Centre Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast (2025) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her writing has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and RTE, and she has adapted The Velveteen Rabbit for the stage. Drawing on her rich experience as a published author, Jan brings both practical insight and inspiration to this workshop.
