Causeway Mummers
The Arts Centre was buzzing with colour, creativity and joyful energy on Saturday 7 February, as the community came together to celebrate the return of the light at our very first Awakening event.
Inspired by Imbolc and in part by Chinese New Year, the centre was alive with music, tradition and hands-on creativity — and it wasn’t just the children getting stuck in. Parents, grandparents and carers rolled up their sleeves too - we saw some grown-ups looking very proud of their St Brigid’s Crosses, one visitor even arrived with her own reeds, keen to get expert guidance from Carolyn — a true highlight and a lovely example of community knowledge-sharing in action.
Our Wishing Tree quickly filled with heartfelt and hopeful messages. Alongside beautiful wishes such as “World Peace,” “Happiness for me and my family,” and “More kindness in the world,” there were also some wonderfully imaginative entries — including wishes for bunnies, to be able to fly, and to finally do the splits. Thank you you Amy Willans for all helping out visitors capture these wishes.
In the pottery studio, creativity shone as families made spring and Imbolc-inspired hanging decorations featuring flowers, butterflies and spring animals, it felt like everyone piece reflecting the excitement and freshness of the new season.
We loved seeing the brilliant, one-of-a-kind dragon puppets dancing their way through the building, made with Christina Smyth, each dragon was completely unique, adding colour, movement and plenty of smiles as they paraded through the centre. The Chinese New Year lanterns, created with Linda Mulholland, also brought brightness, filling the space with colour, hope and good fortune.
And wow - the Causeway Mummers! Lots of little dancers took to the floors during their incredible live walkabout performances — their energy, musicianship and playful spirit had toes tapping and smiles all round.
St Brigid herself wandered the halls, sharing stories and traditions of Imbolc, before everyone gathered outside for a truly magical finale.
Against the gorgeous backdrop of Flowerfield House, Clare, Tina and Grant from Firepoise delivered a stunning fire poi performance, the perfect finale to our event!
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday to celebrate, create and connect. This was the very first time we’ve held Awakening, and we were thrilled with the fantastic response from families and the wider community.
We are also very grateful for the financial support from The Executive Office through Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme, which helped make this inclusive, joyful celebration possible.
We would love to hear your feedback on this event.
