Over the bridge - and into the history books
THE WORK of the one of the north coast's most talented photographers focuses on one of its most enduring and historic tourist attractions this week, as Peter Nash celebrates the opening of his new exhibition: 'Carrick-a-Rede - Beyond the Bridge' at Flowerfield on Tuesday October 20 from 7pm to 9pm.
The exhibition coincides with the launch of a new book by Peter, documenting the salmon fishery that was part of the history of Carrick-a-Rede for many years. Beyond the curiosity that the rope bridge has attracted lies a 350 year old tradition of salmon fishing, with the current bag-net dating from the 19th century. This highly labour-intensive business is facing extinction as Ballintoy man Aki McColgan, who works in partnership with Sean Morton, explains: 'The depletion of the salmon stocks and increasing costs have made it virtually impossible to make a living.' Join us on Tuesday October 20 between 7pm and 9pm for a special evening to celebrate the launch of this special exhibition, which will run for two weeks at Flowerfield. For more information, get in touch with Flowerfield on (028) 7083 1400.
